Graduation December 31, 2009

Wow, graduation was so special. My sister, my daughter and my son's girlfriend went with me. I actually got to the point of declaring that I was tired of crying. Wes was an honor graduate. You can imagine the pride I felt! He was also in the band, which was so neat. I can't believe the ways he has changed and the ways he has stayed exactly the same. I just don't know what else to say. Everyone reading this has either experienced what I just experienced or will only understand once they have… Continue

Graduation Date

Ok, so if BMT is 8 1/2 weeks and Wesley leaves on November 3, that puts his graduation on New Year's weekend. Any thoughts? I mean, sure, my sister and I celebrating New Years together (for the first time in many many years) in San Antonio can only mean fun (and possibly trouble) but will they actually hold graduation over the holiday, or will it be delayed, or what?

I visited my local used bookstore (managed by my best friend) and got a couple of books on the F 15. I figured I… Continue

Finally, A Date

Wes finally got his leave date yesterday. He goes on November 3 and his job will be F15 Avionics. I am so glad he will not be in San Antonio in the summer. He wouldn't mind, but I just can't stand that kind of heat!! A couple of weeks ago, the local recruiters got together and had a big send-off party for all the new recruits who would be leaving over the next few months. All the branches were there and the recruits were introduced. A bunch of local business donated stuff for gift packs for the… Continue

Lesa, “Welcome to the Blue”. I am glad that you have joined us. We are just getting started but we really are here to help parents during this time of changing emotions. Please fell free to ask any questions you may have. We will do our best to find answers for them. I was in the Air Force during Vietnam and both of my sons are in the military now. My oldest joined the Navy and is stationed on the USS Abraham Lincoln CVN 72. My youngest son joined the Air Force over 4 years ago. Please thank Wesley for his up and coming service to this great country for an old Vietnam Vet. I want you to know that this site is here for you in any way we can to help. Like you it was a shock when my oldest told my wife and me that he was going to join the Navy, some how we are adjusting. Again thinks for joining Tell Wesley he is welcome to join as well.

Lesa, I rejoice with you on your sons up and coming High School graduation. When both my boys graduated it was a very emotional time for me. I also share your trepidation of his leaving home. My wife and I are still getting used to the whole empty nest thing. I started this site for just such a situation. It can be a challenging time when our sons and daughters join the military and we want to be here to help. I pray the this site will grow and fill that roll in the lives of the airman and their loved ones.

Lesa, that’s tough. I had a hard time when my guys left. I know it is hard but what helped me was knowing that they were going to do something that they wanted to do. I cried when they left and I cried at their graduations. You may fall apart but I also think you will find it in yourself to stand tall for your son. Seeing them head off to basic is hard but when you get to the graduation and you sit in the stands and watch him march on to the field to graduate you will forget all about the heart ache and be filled with pride. It doesn’t help now and I know, that is one reason why I started this site so that we could have a shoulder to cry on, all be it a cyber shoulder. Lesa, you hang in there and I will be praying for you, your family and Wesley.

Hi, Lesa
Thanks for your input.
Well, my daughter decided that, since she has to lose 5 lbs to enlist, she is going to have an exercise and body-strengthening time. Since she is our dependent, and is under our health insurance, I tiold her that until she is ready to enlist, she should be a full time student somewhere. She settled for studying on line through University of Phoenix. After we started the application, I learned that some colleges have ROTC, which is a great way to start, because the tuition is paid while they prepare to go in as Officers. My daughter is not ambitious, and she is saying she doesn't want to go in as an Officer, because she wouldn't go in until she graduates in two years. She wants to join in July. I feel a little frustrated.

Actually until a month ago she didn't want to join the Military, especially after she heard my son's account of Boot Camp (being tough). Her dream was to graduate in Art. I told her that she probably should also have a degree in a "marketable" subject, like Sociology, or Psychology, because of this Country's financial crisis. She had settled on a degree in Sociology, with a minor in Art. Then the State University said she can't start until June, because of the budget crisis in California. She told me she needed a job now. I casually said that the Militaray would be the fastest way to get a job in this economy. That's when she started talking about joining the Air Force. When her dad, who is a Vet, heard this, he added fire to it, and since she is a daddy's girl, she got more motivated. I am still trying to convince her to finish College first, but she says she doesn't like school (unless it's Art). She now telling me that I am being too pushy. I can't help it...

Lesa, I was wrong you can have an electric razor but they are very hard to keep clean enough for inspection. Here is a web site that can give some idea as to what he can take to BMT.

You may want to check with the recruiter, after reading over this information to confirm it.
