Welcome! Congratulations on your daughter's decision to join the Air Force. I was scared too when my sons both decided to join the military. It has been a wonderful experience for them and I am awed at how much they've grown and matured because of it. This site is a wonderful place to get information and have a community of people share your experience. Is she in boot camp?

Thanks Jane. She has been in Lackland since last Monday. They say that the first week is the hardest - I hope so because she made it one week so far! I heard from her on New Year's Day with her address information. She sure sounded like she needed a hug from her Dad. I know that I need ed one from her :)

David, “Welcome to the Blue”. I am glad that you have joined us. I started Air Force Dads to help support and encourage parents and family members, girlfriends and boyfriends, of young men and woman who have or are going to join the Air Force. Please feel free to look around the site and get involved with the groups and discussions that are going on. Maybe start one of your own. I have two sons and both of them are in the military. My oldest joined the Navy and is stationed on the USS Abraham Lincoln CVN 72. My youngest joined the Air Force 5 years ago, and is stationed at Seymour Johnson AFB N.C. Please thank Sarah for her service to this great country from an old Vietnam Vet.
I apologize for taking so long to welcoming you to this site.

David, I am sorry to be so long in greeting you and answering your question about the Blue Star Banner.

Traditionally the Service Flag in the United States is an official banner that family members of service members in harm’s way can display.
History: The banner was designed in 1917 by United States Army Captain Robert L. Queisser of the Fifth Ohio Infantry, in honor of his two sons who were serving in World War I. It was quickly adopted by the public and by government officials. On September 24, 1917, an Ohio congressman read into the Congressional Record:

“The mayor of Cleveland, the Chamber of Commerce and the Governor of Ohio have adopted this service flag. The world should know of those who give so much for liberty. The dearest thing in all the world to a father and mother-----their children.”

Usage: These flags were first used in World War I, with subsequent standardization and codification by the end of World War II. They were not popular during the Vietnam Conflict but have come back into use. In modern usage, an organization may fly a service flag if one of its members is serving active duty.

Now having typed all that from history I have two in my window for my two boys and neither one of them is in combat. I have them in my window to let passersby know that there are two members from this household out there defending their freedom. David if I were you I would go get a star banner and proudly display it for all to see, if you have not already done so. Your daughter, by joining the military, is saying that she is ready willing and able to go anywhere and do anything to defend this country. That is what the star banner means to me and many other Americans.

I hope this helps.

Sgt Terry
